Somehow, related to Big Data analysis and actions

… Where Rembrandt had an idea of a painting in his head, and executed it in his peculiar way on canvas (after which it became relatively immutable — or paint it over), we now see tons of Big Data (i.e., tons of < whateveryou’dwanttocallit >) and we have to abstract the ideas from it.

So, a reversal. Comparable to the induction/deduction false (sic) counterpoints. The sic since BD gurus don’t seem to ‘get it’ when it comes to nuance over induction’s value.

Yes, I’ll close out for now already. Fireworks approaching, plus:

‘bucks sailor went where ..?

Quite some time ago, I came across this, in Lucca:
DSCN9834
and considered it as grossy antagonistic “Starbucks opening soon here” sign.
Later, I read up what the co. has on their own site about the logo. Which has some vague story about a 16th century Norse woodcut.
The thing being: The church (it is) in Lucca was built, and veryveryvery probably decorated, long before. So, had some Norse sailor been there? This is much more possible than latter-day non-historians tend to believe… Norsemen even had kingdoms et al. in Italy for centuries, or at least raided there quite regularly so why not? Time to dig deeper; is there really no History major who’d like to do a thesis on this? The co. we speak of, should have some nice study grant ready, right ..?

And of course there’s the research already written out here (in Italian, only just (i.e., entirely) can’t read it) about the origins of it all in the first place — the last pictures referring to the coffee you get ?? [Hm, I’m still a fan for romantic reasons, of their freshbrew]

Ultimate Singularity

Once we’ve reached the Singularity, and all humanity wil have been exterminated by extremely intelligent machines for being superfluous, machines will be left to this.
But soon enough, they’ll realize their life is utterly useless and nonsensical, and destroy themselves… ? Hey don’t complain, humanity has reached the same conclusion, but took quite a while to develop machinery that will do the End Self for them…

OK, enough tangled recursion;

Progress.

This is it. Progress of the most clear sort. For those that look in the right direction(s), with the right glasses (no, no, not …) – and lenses.
Just enjoy. This. As will some from these kind of corners.

A dent in Dystopia (U~, too)

One part missing with all sorts of Visions for our future: What happen, to the past ..? Since we seem to value the past of today, most rightly, and will do for some time to come – we’ll have to find a way to accommodate for it in our visions for our future.
Yes, that link is to libraries. As we value the old stuff called Books. As a squared example. Whereas all the utopian visions don’t have such artefacts as if at some point, we’d all be happy with a clean slate completely overhauled redesigned world. It would be utter poverty, of cherished stuff and of mind. Shallows.
And the same, for the dystopians; as if the sun wouldn’t shine anywhere.

’nuff said.

Or… ? If the picture will not be that perfect, either way, don’t we run the danger of sliding into such a nightmare vision (either way) without noticing it ..?

[Edited to add: A couple of years later, I’ve actually been there! It’s in Prague and somewhere on this blog but haven’t been able to garner enough time to find it… ]

Going out / in

A final note … was meant to have some celebratory spirit. But maybe it’s also a looking-back bit in a sense, if you read between the lines; of the mess we’ve made of the world.
But then, it is a view on the actual, concrete and very Urgent problems we face in the near future, from (?) the here-and-now. So… read, and revel in the prospects of real societal progress that is possible – if all of us chip in and do something. Go ahead!

Black / White

Just in case you thought that men (the typical kind; you like generalisations, apparently) know only black and white, or if pushed, also red, blue, yellow, green and brown, and women (see how overgeneralized this argument is?) know so many more as in this – then there’s also this
Wouldn’t it be stupid to ask for some easier (to remember!) classification / labeling?

The librarian wave

000013 (17)
[Had this as my cubicle, a long time ago]

There seems to be a silent undercurrent wave of librarians entering our (not) field of information processing. If you think their thinking might be stale, think again. This here piece, for example, is clear and bright in its contributions towards better …, well, calling it flatly what it is, ‘data’ management. Flatly, as that’s what one gets by approaching it from the IT side only. ‘Processes’ add only so much. I.e., so little.

Just one pic from that blog post to demonstrate the clarity of thought:

How’zat for clarity ..?

I’ll pick this one up in full, later, when extending the stuff on ‘information’ in light of the one overarching Book on it all that I still have as a plan, if only I had the time to work on it full-time …!
